My first experience with home party plan business was in my early twenties (a couple of years ago). I was working as a travel agent in a kiosk at a grocery store in a pretty rough neighborhood. Now, this job was paying me pretty well, to this day it still puzzles me, but that was a few years ago.
A Mary Kay representative was a customer of mine but would also make extra efforts to come and talk with me even when she wasn’t buying an airline ticket. I can only say that the only reason I ended up involved in Mary Kay was she built rapport with me and I trusted her….more on that in a moment. When I first got involved, of course I bought the largest supply of products, on a credit card that she helped me get through the credit union that worked with distributors, and I was well on my way filling my parents basement with shelves of products. Luckily they were in Amway so I had some shelf space to use.
Now, as I mentioned it was completely ironic that this was the opportunity that I chose as my first network marketing experience, because I didn’t wear much makeup, wasn’t very good at putting it on, and surely was not going to be able to put it on others. The “marketing” side of Mary Kay at the time was offering free facial/make-up consultations, ha! That would have been a joke, me putting makeup on someone else, it would have been atrocious. Needless to say, I attended some meetings, sold no product, met with my upline, still sold no products, and the cycle continued.
The 3 foot rule and all of the old school marketing techniques proved fruitless for me. As a matter of fact, I think that the only product that I sold was one Christmas when I packaged as much product together in gift baskets as I could and pleaded with family and friends to come and buy. I think I sold like 3 baskets. This marketing flop left me with a bad taste in my mouth…. there had to be a better way! Okay, so back to how I got involved, I told you that my upline went out of her way to visit me and get to know me and I grew to know her. Because of this, I was willing to try whatever she was selling me.
Today, building a successful home party plan business can be done in a much more effective way by using the internet as a tool to let others get to know you. Your efforts are multiplied tremendously and this is the method that has allowed me to finally experience success in marketing after many attempts with old school methods that failed miserably. I am so thankful that there is a better way and I am also grateful for all of the lessons that I learned through my involvement in Mary Kay.
